Body of JBLM soldier recovered from lake in Mount Rainier National Park

The body of a 23-year-old man was recovered Monday from a lake in Mount Rainier National Park.

Park officials said Antonio Scott, a Joint Base Lewis-McChord specialist, went swimming with friends in the unnamed lake Saturday.

As Scott was swimming across the lake, he began to struggle.

His friends tried to help but he went underwater and did not resurface, park spokeswoman Patricia Wold said.

They notified a ranger and did a quick search but did not find Scott.

Two search teams assisted with checking the lake for the next two days and Scott’s body was found about noon Monday.

“We send our deepest condolences to Specialist Scott’s family, friends, and military colleagues,” Tracy Swartout, the park’s deputy superintendent, said in a statement. “We also appreciate the many searchers who contributed to locating him.”

The unnamed lake is located below the Emmons Glacier near White River Campground.
