Man drowns in Alder Lake after suffering panic attack

A 21-year-old man drowned in Alder Lake Monday after suffering a panic attack in the cold water, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The man has not been identified.

Deputies were called about 4:30 p.m. to Sunny Beach Point between Eatonville and Elbe after bystanders reported seeing a swimmer in distress.

The man was swimming with a friend about 40 feet from shore when he had a panic attack and went underwater.

Firefighters snorkeled to the area where the man was last seen and found his body several feet beneath the water.

They pulled him from the water and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
