Suspect in custody after future mosque in Federal Way is demolished by fire

A suspect was in custody Tuesday after an early-morning Friday fire destroyed a building in Federal Way that an Islamic community center was renovating into a mosque.

Federal Way police detectives identified a person of interest in the crime. The man, in his early 40s, was in custody on unrelated charges.

“He will soon be charged with arson regarding the intentional fire that was started at the unoccupied building in the 27900 block of Pacific Highway South,” said police spokesman Kurt Schwan.

Schwan said there was nothing that identified the building as an Islamic facility.

The fire destroyed the building which previously had been used as a church.

The Bilal Islamic Community Center in Kent was renovating the building.
