Schools across Pierce County cancel classes Tuesday due to fires, power outages
School is canceled for some Pierce County school districts due to fires, thick smoke and power outages in the area.
Sumner-Bonney Lake, Orting and Puyallup school districts made the announcement early Tuesday morning.
“Due to a widespread power outage affecting thousands in Sumner and Bonney Lake, including all of our schools, and with no access to the internet, we need to cancel school today, Sept. 8,” Sumner-Bonney Lake posted on its Facebook account on its first day of school. “With high winds in the forecast and continuing fires in the area, we’re uncertain when power can be restored to all of our students and staff. Please stay tuned as we will try to communicate with all families as we, too, have limited internet access.”
Orting posted on social media that it expects to resume school Wednesday.
Puyallup schools said school and distance learning is canceled for Tuesday but meals will still be distributed at all school sites between 11 a.m. and noon.
Districts are returning to school remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
