Pierce County’s newest transportation system has a name we can all get behind

Pierce County’s upcoming bus rapid transit system was given a name recently that conjures up water, rain, moisture … things we could all use right now.

“Stream” was selected by the Pierce Transit Board of Commissioners on Sept. 14 as the name for the new system set to open in 2024.

The 14.4-mile-long system is the South Sound’s first bus rapid transit. It will run along Pacific Avenue between downtown Tacoma and Spanaway.

Construction of the $95 million system is scheduled to begin in late 2021.

Using characteristics of rail systems, BRT can carry larger numbers of riders with greater efficiency than a standard bus. BRT stations have real-time arrival information, before-you-board fare collection, raised platforms and multiple doors.

Currently, the planned BRT route along Pacific Avenue is served by Pierce Transit buses as Route 1. It’s the agency’s busiest line.

A consulting firm was hired to research possible names, according to Pierce Transit.
