In-person learning starts Sept. 28 for Tacoma preschool, kindergarten, special ed kids
Tacoma students enrolled in preschool and kindergarten will return for in-person learning starting Sept. 28.
Tacoma Public Schools sent an email to staff Friday stating that preschoolers will attend school in cohorts on a reduced schedule and kindergarten students will attend school four days per week — Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
“Students in first and second grade will not attend school in person starting Sept. 28, as we previously stated,” the district wrote in Friday’s email. “They will continue on the remote learning path for now.”
Elementary special education students in grades K-5 will return to in-person learning four days a week, with Wednesdays spent learning virtually from home.
Middle and high school special education students in grades 6-12 will return in cohorts. Case managers are expected to contact families with specific scheduling details next week.
The district will wait to share the return dates for its older students.
“As we have worked on implementing a phased-in approach to returning students to in-person learning, we have identified the need to make the plan more gradual in order to have time to observe and adapt to this new environment,” the district stated Friday.
The good news is that COVID-19 case counts remain low, the district said.
More information, including health-safety requirements, will be shared in the upcoming week.
