Protesters block Southbound Interstate 5 at South 38th Street in Tacoma

UPDATE 7:45 p.m.: Protesters have now moved back to city streets.

Protesters are blocking southbound Interstate 5 at South 38th Street in Tacoma, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Earlier Thursday evening, Black Lives Matter protesters rallied in front of Tacoma police headquarters. Some signs reference Manuel Ellis, a Tacoma man who died while being restrained by Tacoma police in March.

At about 5:30 p.m. they began moving down South Pine Street toward South 38th Street. They began to block traffic at that time.

Tacoma police spokeswoman Wendy Haddow said the group moved east on South 38th toward Steele Street. TPD blocked traffic for the group while they were at Steele Street. .

Sometime after 7 p.m., members of the group moved onto I-5, she said.
