Tacoma bar The Mix reopens with plans for virtual drag show

The Mix, Tacoma’s longtime LGBTQ+ bar, is back open as of Monday. The bar and entertainment destination recently celebrated its 12th year of operation while also being closed since March due to COVID-19.

In a post on social media, it was announced that it would now be open seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. There is a requirement to wear a mask and limitations on the number of patrons, as well as no karaoke nights or live drag show performances.

“We are very excited, but it’s also kind of nerve-wracking. We’re like an entertainment thing,” said Courtney Moore, one of the co-owners for The Mix. “Our entire business is changing, at least for the time being.”

The Mix was the go-to destination for celebrating during Tacoma’s Pride but had to cancel its yearly Block Party. Pride celebrations took place virtually this year without an in-person party at The Mix.

Now, they are navigating an uncertain future.

“We really can’t do any entertainment,” Moore said. “It’s supposed to be just strictly coming in, doing what you’re supposed to do and leaving.”

The team did film a drag show that it will make available to celebrate the spooky season with plans to have viewers tip the performers as they would be able to in person.

“We’ll put it out online for people who aren’t comfortable coming to the bar,” Moore said. “We’re just gonna play it on the televisions at the bar on Halloween.”

Other than that, Moore is hoping to ease back into operating as they attempt to find their footing in a brand new world.

“For now, let’s just figure out how this operates for us and see what people are hoping for. I’m sure we’ll have some creative ideas as we go,” Moore said. “It’s been a long time, we’re a little rusty. …

“We’re just trying to take it easy for the first few weeks or so.”
