Outage disrupts 911 calls in Pierce County

911 service in Pierce County from South Sound 911 was disrupted Monday morning for about three hours due to issues with equipment. An emergency number was activated while service was affected.

South Sound 911 said if people had an emergency and the call didn’t go through to 911, they should call 253-382-5000. According to a tweet from the service, the outage was caused by “a cut fiber & redundancy failure.”

The outage appeared to affect the service’s new building at 3580 Pacific Ave., according to a tweet from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. South Sound 911 staff were working at the service’s old building until the issue was resolved.

The outage was reported at about 10:50 a.m. Regular 911 service was restored at about 2:05 p.m., according to a tweet from the service.

Tacoma Public Utilities also experienced service issues Monday. The office reported it’s phone lines were unavailable at about 1 p.m. due to an “unexpected technical issue.” People can email customer service at cservice@cityoftacoma.org or manage their accounts online.
