A fire caused significant damage to an office building at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish in Tacoma on Sunday morning, according to the Tacoma Fire Department.

Crews were dispatched to the 7100 block of South 12th Street just before 5 a.m. The church sanctuary and a school were not damaged by the blaze, assistant fire chief Kris Johnson said.

Firefighters initially attacked the fire from inside the office, but as it grew and became unsafe, crews evacuated the building and fought the fire from outside, he said.

Johnson said there likely were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Johnson described the office as an U-shaped building.

“I’m not sure if they were able to save a section of it,” he said. “There was significant damage to a good portion of it.”
