A motorcyclist died Friday evening after colliding with a vehicle making a turn at a Fircrest-area intersection.

According to Wendy Haddow, media representative for Tacoma Police Department, the accident occurred at 9:35 p.m. The motorcyclist, a 24-year-old male, allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on South Orchard Street, struck a car making a left turn onto Orchard from South Emerson Street.

The motorcyclist died on scene, according to Haddow. Investigators cited excessive speed involved in the crash.

The accident shut down the intersection for several hours as investigators worked at the scene.
