Washington zoo welcomes healthy armadillo pup

For the first time in its 116-year history, the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington, has welcomed a healthy baby armadillo.

The female pup, seen in this video from November 16, was born to southern three-banded armadillos Vespa and Scooter. She was born last month and is just now beginning to open her eyes.

“She is healthy and the perfect little replica of her parents,” said Dr Karen Wolf, the head veterinarian at Point Defiance.

Native to central South America, the southern three-banded armadillo is now listed as a near threated species.
