Special council meeting Wednesday to tackle proposed Home in Tacoma amendments
Tacoma City Council members will meet Wednesday to review and possibly take action on the slate of amendments on the city’s proposed rezoning plan.
Fifteen amendments were presented by various council members at last week’s study session, with a repeat presentation during the evening council meeting. The number has grown to 16.
The Home in Tacoma ordinance is set to encourage more types of housing development in the city with replacing single-family and low-density multifamily zoning with low-scale and mid-scale housing designations.
While single-family homes will be included in both low-scale and mid-scale designations, other types of development also will be allowed, along with changes to allowed density.
Plans for a special council meeting were announced at last week’s study session after 15 amendments were introduced.
The meeting’s details were announced by the city on Tuesday.
According to the notice, the meeting will take place Wednesday (Dec. 1) at 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. It will be broadcast on TV Tacoma as well as livestreamed and accessible via the usual meeting links on the city’s website.
“The City Council may take action (vote) on proposed amendments to Ordinance No. 28793, regarding the Home in Tacoma Project, at this meeting,” according to Tuesday’s announcement.
One more amendment has been added since last week, from council member Robert Thoms, calling to “clarify the policy intent that zoning should be structured to encourage development in areas that don’t already meet the vision in terms of density targets.”
First reading of the ordinance occurred at the council’s Nov. 16 meeting. A proposal to continue the final reading at the council’s Dec. 7 meeting will be considered Nov. 30.
