Preliminary plans filed for possible new medical clinic tied to St. Joseph hospital
While preliminary plans for a new medical building across from St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma have been filed with the city, the hospital remains mum about what’s actually coming.
An outline submitted for the St. Joseph Medical Center South Sound Building, included in the city pre-application filing, shows the building, at 1524 S I St., going in over two phases, with both encompassing a medical clinic and parking garage, and both referred to as “Site A.”
St. Joseph Medical Center, in an emailed statement, told The News Tribune that it “filed a permit through the pre-submission process with the City of Tacoma to gather additional details on the parcel of land.
“There are no planned or approved projects for the site at this time.”
The proposed building is listed in the documents as 150 feet in height, 60,000-250,000 square feet, with tenant space at 55,000-90,000 square feet and a connecting bridge to the existing hospital.
The land, owned by Franciscan Health System-West, is currently used for parking with 105 spaces. The new building would include 400 parking stalls, according to the pre-app information.
The project’s estimated cost is $60 million.
City staff’s questions or concerns listed about the project included set backs, height limit, South 15th Street requirements, alley vacation, and combining parcels across alley.
According to the documents filed with the city, initial permits could be filed as soon as May, with construction tentatively starting in August, though dates submitted in pre-apps typically update later in the permit process.
