Multi-vehicle rollover collision near Spanaway leads to 2-mile road closure
Update, Dec. 23, 8 a.m.: Seven people were involved in the three-car collision, a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said. Deputies initially reported five people were involved. All seven were transported to the hospital for their injuries.
Deputies said the driver who caused the crash is being investigated for driving under the influence. A warrant was written to draw the person’s blood for testing.
The crash occurred after that person, going west on 138th Street South, ran a red light and was hit by a second car traveling north, deputies said. A third vehicle, traveling north, then also struck the vehicle that ran a red light.
Original post: A rollover-collision involving multiple cars Wednesday on a road near Spanaway sent one person to the hospital in critical condition. Pierce County deputies closed about two miles of road while they responded.
Three vehicles and five people were involved in the collision at Spanaway Loop Road South and 138th Street South, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department deputies reported in a tweet at 10:45 a.m.. Two people were extricated from vehicles by Central Pierce Fire & Rescue crews.
Spanaway Loop Road South was closed from Military Road South to 116th Street South, according to a tweet from the the sheriff’s department. Deputies advised drivers to take alternate routes.
One person was transported to the hospital in critical condition, sheriff’s department spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss said. Two others were also transported to the hospital for their injuries. Others were treated at the scene.
One driver involved in the collision was being evaluated for impairment, Moss said. He said it’s still unclear how the crash occurred.
A second collision was later reported at Military Road South and C Street South near the Sprinker Recreation Center. Deputies said the incident was affecting alternate routes drivers may be using to avoid closures from the first collision.
Deputies shared a map of what part of the road was closed.
