Small homeless encampment near Wright Park in Tacoma to be cleared
Outreach workers have notified people at a homeless encampment near Wright Park in Tacoma of the city’s intent to clear the site.
The five-day notices were posted Tuesday at South 2nd Street and G Street, city spokesperson Megan Snow said.
There are currently six people living at the site, according to the city, and there is adequate shelter available to offer them.
Snow said the city’s outreach team has been successful at placing four individuals previously at the site into shelters.
While the five-day notices were placed Tuesday, Snow said the city will initiate clean-up only after all individuals have voluntarily removed themselves or accepted offers of shelter.
“This means that although we are posting to clear in five days, it may take longer to ensure all of the individuals have relocated prior to initiating the cleanup effort,” Snow said in an email.
A person living at the encampment said that people experiencing homelessness are still people and that everyone needs to help each other out.
“Just because we’re homeless doesn’t mean that we’re anything other than what we were the day before we stopped living in four walls and a roof,” Michelle Thompson told The News Tribune video journalist Tony Overman on Tuesday.
