Overnight apartment fire injures 2 and displaces 13 on Pearl Street in Tacoma
Two people were injured early Saturday morning when fire swept through a Tacoma apartment building on North Pearl Street.
The fire destroyed three apartments and displaced 13 people, according to Tacoma Fire Department spokesman Joe Meinecke.
Firefighters were called to the scene in the 1200 block around 3 a.m. and found fire and smoke on the second floor of the multistory building. The fire then spread to the third floor before crews extinguished it.
The two injured people were taken to a local hospital and were reported to be in stable condition, according to the Tacoma Fire Department.
Investigators determined that the blaze started as a cooking fire on the first floor, Meinecke said later Saturday morning.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants.
