Fatal two-car collision in Tacoma leads to road closure on Portland Avenue
A 53-year-old man was killed in a two-car collision Monday morning in Tacoma when he ran a red light and struck a vehicle turning left, police said. Part of Portland Avenue was closed while police and investigators responded to the scene.
Tacoma Police Department officers responded to the fatal collision around 3:50 a.m. on Portland Avenue between East 44th Street and East 46th Street.
That section of road was still closed at 9 a.m. while the Collision Investigation Team was on the scene. Drivers were asked to use alternate routes.
Police said the 53-year-old man killed in the collision was the at-fault driver. He was driving south on Portland Avenue in a Pontiac G6 at a high rate of speed when he ran the light. Two people in an Infiniti G35 were turning left onto Portland Avenue from 44th Street when the back of their car was struck.
The driver of the Pontiac was declared dead on the scene. He has not been publicly identified. The two people in the other car sustained minor injuries.
