A woman was killed Monday morning when the car she was driving collided with another on South Orchard Street in Tacoma and then hit a tree.

Multiple witnesses told Tacoma police that a 2015 Scion sedan was traveling northbound on Orchard at a high rate of speed.

About 8:52 a.m. a BMW pulled out of a gas station parking lot just north of Center Street on the east side of Orchard into the northbound lanes. It was struck by the Scion.

The collision tore off the BMW’s front wheels, according to Tacoma police spokesperson Wendy Haddow. The Scion then traveled across Orchard and struck a tree in a residential yard.

The driver of the Scion, a 34-year-old woman, was transported to a local hospital where she later died.

The 31-year-old male driver of the BMW sustained minor injuries and was briefly trapped, Haddow said.
