Semi-truck driver suspected of DUI arrested after man killed in crash on I-5 in Milton

A man driving a tow truck on Interstate 5 on Tuesday morning in Milton was killed in a collision with a semi truck, Washington State Patrol troopers said. The semi truck driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The collision was reported on northbound Interstate 5 just south of Porter Way at 6:22 a.m., according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. Trooper Robert Reyer said the man killed was on the right shoulder of the interstate securing a box truck to his tow truck when a semi truck veered to the right and hit him.

The two right lanes were blocked while WSP troopers and WSDOT investigated. Drivers can expect delays on northbound I-5. Reyer said traffic was backed up to the Tacoma Dome.

The driver of the tow truck was declared dead at the scene, Reyer said on Twitter. He has not been publicly identified.

The semi truck driver is a 65-year-old man. Reyer said charges of vehicular homicide would be forwarded to the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Reyer asked drivers on the interstate to be mindful of emergency vehicles responding to incident scenes. He said drivers should slow down significantly when approaching emergency lights or move over a lane.
