Man standing on I-5 in Tacoma struck, killed by oncoming traffic

A 25-year-old Lakewood man was struck by two cars and killed Tuesday night on Interstate 5 in Tacoma. The man was standing in a northbound traffic lane when he was hit, the Washington State Patrol said.

The collision occurred about 9:55 p.m. on the interstate north of Portland Avenue East, troopers said in a news release. The man was standing in a travel lane when he was struck by a Chevy sedan traveling north in the same lane. At about the same time, a second vehicle struck the man.

Troopers, the Washington State Department of Transportation and Tacoma Fire Department responded to the incident. The incident blocked the left three lanes for two and a half hours.

The 25-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

The driver of the Chevy sedan, a 60-year-old man, stopped, but the second driver whose vehicle struck the man continued driving.

Troopers suspect the man was trying to kill himself by walking into traffic. On Tuesday morning, troopers said they want to contact the second driver who hit him, but they said the driver might not have realized they hit a person. Troopers said most of the impact was taken by the first car.
