Tacoma man crashes vehicle into I-5 construction zone and injures 2, including Tumwater man

A 22-year-old Tacoma man faces two counts of vehicular assault after he crashed his vehicle into a parked vehicle and a pedestrian on southbound I-5 early Sunday morning, according to Washington State Patrol.

The pedestrian, a 37-year-old Spanaway woman, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

The 22-year-old driver was suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

About 3:10 a.m. Sunday, the Tacoma man and a second vehicle were driving south near Portland Avenue in a construction zone that had been reduced to one lane. Meanwhile, a third vehicle was parked in that zone and the Spanaway woman was standing outside of it.

Troopers say the Tacoma man struck the second vehicle, then swerved and hit the parked vehicle and the woman. The unidentified second vehicle left the scene, according to State Patrol.

The Tacoma man and a 27-year-old Tumwater man in the parked vehicle also were injured and taken to St. Joseph Medical Center.

During the investigation, all lanes of southbound I-5 were closed for three and a half hours, according to State Patrol.
