Serious-injury collision in Puyallup causing traffic delays

A 60-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured Thursday morning in Puyallup. Police said the incident was causing some traffic delays.

The incident occurred about 6 a.m. in the 2200 block of North Meridian Avenue near Valley Avenue Northeast, Puyallup Police Department spokesperson Capt. Ryan Portmann said.

One lane of North Meridian Avenue was closed while police investigated. Portmann expected the closure to remain for several hours.

An initial investigation found the man was crossing North Meridian Avenue without a crosswalk in the middle of the block. He was struck by a vehicle traveling north.

Police responded and provided aid to the man until Central Pierce Fire & Rescue arrived and transported him to a Tacoma-area hospital. The man was in critical condition.

There were no signs of impairment in the driver who hit the man, police said in a news release. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative. The Metro Cities Major Collision Response Team was investigating.
