Man dies in shooting involving Tacoma police near the Tacoma Mall

Tacoma police fatally shot an armed man Wednesday afternoon near the Tacoma Mall.

The incident occurred near the west entrance to the mall, off South Pine Street at South 45th Street. No officers were injured.

Tacoma police spokeswoman Wendy Haddow said police confronted the man about 3:30 p.m.

“Shots were fired. The suspect was declared deceased on scene. A weapon was recovered,” Haddow said.

The Pierce County Force Investigation Team will investigate the shooting, Haddow said.

Dozens of police personnel were on the scene, which was outside a six-story residential building. Two people huddled under a blanket on a retaining wall, occasionally speaking with officers.

Further details were not immediately available.

South Pine Street was closed between South 47th Street and South 42nd Street, and police advised drivers to find alternate routes while the investigation is underway.
