Video shows fallen Pierce County deputy reading kids’ book as part of ‘Storytime’ program

A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty this week participated in a department program started during the pandemic called “Storytime with a Sheriff.”

Deputy Dominique “Dom” Calata video-recorded himself reading the picture book “Moon” by Britta Teckentrup from his patrol car in April 2020, according to the Sheriff’s Department’s YouTube channel.

Calata said on the video he chose the book partly because he was working the night shift at the time.

“It also happens to be my son’s favorite book, and he’s also obsessed with the moon and was pretty excited last week when we had our super moon out,” the deputy said. “Without further ado, I hope you are able to sit back and enjoy.”

He then read the book, holding the pages aloft so that the pictures were visible to the camera.

The Sheriff’s Department said on YouTube it started the program, which has included a number of deputies and Sheriff Ed Troyer reading books, to help provide relief during COVID-19 lockdowns.

“We know that right now lots of parents and grandparents in our community are looking for ways to educate and entertain their kids. We also know that some kids may be feeling uneasy or worried about their safety,” according to a program description posted in March 2020. “So we came up with a fun way to let your kids know that we are out keeping them safe, we care about them, and everything is going to be ok.”

In addition to working with the Sheriff’s Department, Calata served in the Washington National Guard. At the end of his reading, he thanked members of the military and the loved ones who support them.
