Memorial procession is Friday for fallen Pierce County deputy. Here’s the route

The memorial procession for fallen Pierce County sheriff’s deputy Dom Calata will take place Friday between Puyallup and Parkland.

Calata was mortally wounded March 15 in a SWAT team operation to serve an arrest warrant on a convicted felon. He died the next day.

According to a Wednesday press release from Pierce County, the procession will begin at the Washington State Fairgrounds at 10:30 a.m. and follow a route ending at The Church For All Nations, 111 112th St. E.

“The public is encouraged to line the route of the procession to show their support for Deputy Calata and his family,” according to the news release.

The procession will:

Begin by traveling west on 9th Avenue Southwest

Turn left on Fairview Drive, which becomes 9th Street Southwest

Turn right on 39th Avenue Southwest, which becomes 112th Street East

Continue on 112th Street East to the Church For All Nations

The procession is expected to end about 12:30 p.m.

People are advised to plan ahead because of road closures on and along the processional route. That includes the closure of 112th Street East from 7th Avenue South to Pacific Avenue South in the Parkland area from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The celebration of life begins at 1 p.m. and is open to the public but with very limited seating at the Church For All Nations. The general public is encouraged to watch the service from a satellite location at Champions Centre, 1819 E. 72nd St. in Tacoma.
