Woman dies during vehicle collision in Tacoma after driving into oncoming traffic

A 64-year old woman died Tuesday morning in Tacoma when she drove into oncoming traffic on a two-lane road in the city’s South End neighborhood.

Tacoma police said the woman was suspected to have had a medical emergency before her vehicle went into the other lane and struck another car head-on. South Yakima Avenue was blocked between South 86th Street and South 88th Street while investigators were on the scene.

The collision was reported around 7:43 a.m. on South Yakima Avenue, Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Wendy Haddow said. The 64-year-old woman was driving south when she went into the oncoming lane and struck a northbound vehicle.

The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 34-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries, Haddow said.

Speed was not suspected to be a factor in the crash, Haddow said. The collision investigation team responded to the scene.
