The pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Federal Way will be ordained as a bishop in the Catholic faith Tuesday.

Father Frank Schuster was appointed by Pope Francis to be the new auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Seattle. He joins the current archbishop, Paul Etienne, and auxiliary bishop Eusebio Elizondo.

On Tuesday, the apostolic nuncio, Pope Francis’ representative in the United States, will preside over Schuster’s ordination at St. James Cathedral in Seattle with more than 100 priests from the archdiocese and visiting bishops in attendance.

Father Frank Schuster

Schuster, a Mount Vernon native, moved with his family to Maple Valley at age 6. They lived along the Cedar River.

He attended Kennedy Catholic High School where his father served as principal.

Schuster earned a psychology degree at the University of Washington and then attended Mundelein Seminary in Illinois where he received his Bachelor of Sacred Theology and his Master of Divinity.

He’s been serving in the Archdiocese of Seattle since 1999 and at St. Vincent de Paul since 2021.

Seattle Archdiocese

The archdiocese encompasses 72 Catholic schools and 174 parishes, missions and pastoral centers.

In 2021, the archdiocese combined four Tacoma parishes into one due to declining membership.

One of those parishes, Holy Rosary, had its historic church slated it for demolition after it began falling apart. Its final fate rests with the new super parish and Etienne.
