Tacoma plans Hilltop homeless encampment removal and clean-up near People’s Park
A homeless encampment just south of People’s Park on Tacoma’s Hilltop has been slated for removal and cleanup, the city of Tacoma announced Wednesday.
The removal of tents, makeshift structures and personal items will tentatively begin May 18, the city said.
The city estimates 40 people are living outdoors in the area, mostly centered around South L and South 10th streets. Most of the shelters have been erected in the parking strips at that intersection.
“Although our encampment removal policy allows a 72-hour posting, we will implement a two-week posting period to allow for increased connection to shelter,” the city said in a statement.
The Homeless Engagement and Alternatives Liaison Team has been visiting the site since March to connect its inhabitants with resources.
“We will coordinate with the Tacoma Police Department, and other homeless outreach agencies necessary to complete the encampment removal,” the city said.
Items left behind will be cleared only after the encampment has been vacated, the city said.
