Tacoma City Council member Conor McCarthy announced Thursday that he plans to resign his seat later this month.

To fill his vacancy, the city manager will solicit applications. Applicants must be registered to vote in the City of Tacoma and be a resident of Tacoma for two years.

If more than 10 residents apply, each council member will select one applicant to be interviewed. In the public eight-minute interviews, applicants will present their credentials and answer questions from council members. The public will be able to comment.

Council members can go into executive session to discuss the applicants’ qualifications.

The council will vote on the nominees and the one with the majority vote will become the new council member. The new council member should be sworn in at the earliest opportunity or no later than the next scheduled city council meeting, according to the city’s rules of procedure.

The new council member will serve the remainder of the unexpired term.
