Here’s the reason you might notice smoke coming from Joint Base Lewis-McChord
People living on or near Joint Base Lewis-McChord might experience smoke in their neighborhoods for the next few days.
News released by the JBLM Twitter account alerted people that there is smoke coming from the artillery impact area as a result of a brush fire.
According to JBLM spokesman Joseph Piek, fires on base are not unusual in the summer months. Piek said brush fires can happen in the impact area when vegetation dries and the temperature begins to rise.
Piek said the fire must be allowed to burn itself out due to unexploded ordnance in the impact area, which could be a safety hazard.
According to information shared via Twitter, the fire is not dangerous, but JBLM is informing people that the smoke might continue over the next several days.
