Man killed in vehicle collision on SR-7 near Spanaway, troopers say
A 53-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon in a two-car collision on state Route 7 near Spanaway, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The collision occurred about 12:22 p.m. on Route 7 at 224th Street East. According to a WSP news release, drugs and alcohol were not a factor. The man killed in the crash was from Roy. According to the release, he was driving a Ford F-450 and was not wearing a seat belt.
Troopers said the crash occurred when a 78-year-old Eatonville man driving a Jeep Cherokee was turning left onto the highway to go north. As he turned, the man driving the Ford was traveling south on state Route 7, and the Ford struck the Jeep.
Trooper Robert Reyer said the Eatonville man was at fault for failing to yield to the Ford.
Reyer said the Ford spun after it collided with the Jeep, and the Roy man was ejected from his vehicle. The vehicles came to a rest on the northbound shoulder. Both were totaled.
The Washington State Department of Transportation, WSP troopers and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to the scene. Both drivers were transported to St. Joseph’s Medical Center for their injuries. The Roy man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Troopers said the incident blocked the roadway for about three hours.
