The Hylebos Bridge in the Port of Tacoma was closed Wednesday morning due to an issue with its eastern lift, according to the city.

Update, 3:05 p.m. Aug. 3: The Hylebos Bridge was reopened to vehicle traffic by 2:40 p.m. City spokesperson Stacy Ellifritt said in an email that there appeared to be a computer system communication issue. She said an electrical contractor is working to find the root cause of the problem.

Original story: The Hylebos Bridge in Tacoma was closed to vehicle traffic Wednesday morning due to a maintenance issue that caused the bridge’s eastern lift to become non-operational.

Port of Tacoma drivers who need to access the peninsula and state Route 509 should use Taylor Way, according to the city.

The bridge has been left open to shipping traffic, said Steve Carstens, a professional engineer with Tacoma’s Public Works Department. In an email, a city spokesperson said Carstens did not have a timeline for when repairs would be completed.

Exactly what caused the bridge’s lift to stop working is not known. Carstens said it’s believed to be electrical-related. A technician was onsite Wednesday morning troubleshooting the issue.
