South Tacoma house fire causes ‘heavy damage’ to home, fire department says

A fire broke out at a home in South Tacoma Friday afternoon, causing “heavy damage” to the home’s first floor, according to Tacoma Fire Department. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Fire officials said the house’s occupants were at home when the fire began, but they evacuated and no one was injured.

Crews were called to the fire at about 12:12 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Cedar Street. Photos shared by the fire department showed firefighters running hoses into the home and cutting holes in the roof to allow smoke to ventilate.

Fire department spokesperson Joe Meinecke said crews quickly got the fire under control. Fire investigators were on their way to the scene around12:45 p.m.

The blaze burned the home’s interior and exterior, but the damage wasn’t extensive, according to Meinecke. He said there wasn’t an indication of structural damage.
