Driver crashes into Pierce Transit bus in Tacoma, causing traffic backups on Pacific Ave.

An SUV crashed into the rear tire of a Pierce Transit bus Tuesday morning in Tacoma, causing traffic backups on Pacific Avenue near the city’s Eastside neighborhood, according to police.

The driver of the SUV was suspected to be impaired by drugs or alcohol, Tacoma Police Department said in a tweet. A spokesperson said a woman and a child were also in the car. All of the occupants were transported to the hospital. The woman suffered a serious but not life-threatening injury.

The crash occurred at 7:31 a.m. near South 38th Street and Pacific Avenue. Police said the SUV was driving east on 38th Street when the driver made a right turn onto southbound Pacific, where he struck the bus.

Police said 13 passengers were on the bus. TPD spokesperson Wendy Haddow said none of the passengers appeared to be seriously injured. Police are investigating.
