Tacoma firefighters battle large brush fire in field west of South Tacoma Way
Tacoma firefighters were called to extinguish a brush fire Monday morning that flared up in a grassy field west of South Tacoma Way. No injuries were reported.
Tacoma Fire Department assistant chief Sionna Stallings-Alailima said crews were dispatched at about 10:55 a.m. to 4336 S. Adams St. She said the fire was reported about 100 yards west of that location, between Adams and South Tyler Street. She said shortly after crews arrived, more units were requested. Four fire engines responded along with two smaller brush fire rigs.
Firefighters had the blaze under control by about 12:28 p.m. and were extinguishing remaining hot spots, according to a tweet from the department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Stallings-Alailima said the area where the fire was burning wasn’t easy to access. She said there aren’t a lot of roads in the area and many are overgrown, making it difficult for fire engines to get to the fire. The assistant chief said the fire department deals with brush fires every day this time of year, but most are small and only require one crew to extinguish.
“In this area, it’s a large area with low access, and so you might not even be able to see how far it goes, how big it’s growing if you don’t have eyes on different sides of it,” Stallings-Alailima said.
