Extra layer time: Get ready for colder nights in Tacoma area starting later next week

Grab some extra blankets as nights are definitely going to grow colder next week, with the Puget Sound region seeing lows dipping into the 20s.

The National Weather Service office in Seattle says overnight lows will be their warmest this weekend compared with the coming days, with lows moving into the upper 20s as soon as Monday to the north in Blaine and Bellingham, and by Wednesday for most of the I-5 corridor in Western Washington.

“Unfortunately the temperatures we’re dealing with now into Saturday will be the warmest for a while. A cooling trend is expected next week. Even beyond that, below normal, or even much below normal temperatures are likely,” the office said in a social media post on Friday.

The eight- to 14-day outlook shows the region heading for more dry conditions after Saturday, with chances of rain and/or snow creeping back in the days closer to Christmas.

Locally, steady rain was set to turn more into scattered showers Saturday with a high near 50 and low in the lower 40s, and Sunday seeing cloudy skies and a high in the mid-40s and low in the upper 30s.

The current weather system brought snow to roadways overnight Friday into Saturday in the Hood Canal area, NWS reported.

Wind gusts also were reported in various areas overnight, including Port Townsend, Friday Harbor and Hoquiam, with bursts climbing past 30 mph. Wind gusts were still being reported Saturday morning in the North Bend area, according to social media posts.

Eastern Washington, meanwhile, was dealing with snow/rain mixes leading to black ice and slick roads on Saturday, along with some road closures.

Saturday morning, a coastal flood advisory was in effect for areas around Puget Sound, Hood Canal, Admiralty Inlet and the Northern Inland Waters.

“The combination of high astronomical tide plus low pressure may lead to minor tidal overflow,” NWS said in an update Saturday.
