State troopers, Pierce County police will be out on SR 7 Saturday. Here’s where, why

Washington state troopers and Pierce County law enforcement agencies will conduct emphasis patrols on state Route 7 from Parkland to Spanaway on Saturday to prevent serious crashes.

Tacoma, Bonney Lake and Puyallup, are partnering with state troopers on the High Visibility Enforcement, or HiVE, patrol, according to a Washington State Patrol news release. Saturday’s daylong initiative is the third of four emphasis patrols for the holiday season and will focus on state Route 7 between state Route 512 and state Route 507, particularly during peak crash times.

Patrolling police will be on the lookout for any violations that can cause crashes, including speed, following distance, impaired driving, distracted driving and aggressive driving.

State troopers have investigated 31 fatal crashes in Pierce County so far this year, according to WSP. The Washington Traffic Safety Commission reported the state saw a 20-year high in fatal crash numbers in 2021.

The last HiVE patrol will be Dec. 31, according to WSP.
