A boy has been shot and killed on Portland Avenue. Police are looking for the shooter

UPDATE 8:05 p.m.:

A boy died after being shot Thursday afternoon, according to Tacoma police.

South Sound 911 received calls of shots fired in the 4000 block of Portland Avenue East just before 3 p.m..

Officers immediately administered first aid to the victim until Tacoma Fire Department personnel arrived. The boy was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries, police said. A department statement described the boy as “a juvenile male,” but did not provide his exact age.

Police said they are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards called it a “tragic day for Tacoma.”

“Although any loss of life is unacceptable, it is even more painful when we see a young life cut short,” Woodards in a statement late Thursday, issued four minutes after police sent out their news release.

The mayor said police were working to identify and apprehend the shooter.

Tacoma police have closed Portland Avenue between East 40th and East 38th streets for a shooting investigation, the department tweeted late Thursday evening.

Crime scene technicians are on the way to the scene, according to Tacoma police. No further details were available.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.
