A 73-year-old man was hit and killed by a driver on Pacific Avenue Saturday night in what appears to be an unfortunate accident, according to Tacoma police.

The man died at the scene in the 5900 block of Pacific Avenue, spokeswoman Wendy Haddow said.

The 45-year-old male driver was not under the influence at the time, and although the police department’s collision investigation team continues to look into the incident, no arrests have been made, she said.

About 7:10 p.m. Saturday, the 45-year-old driver and his 43-year-old female passenger were headed north in an SUV. About the same time, the man stepped off the sidewalk, presumably to cross the street, and was hit by the vehicle.

The driver called 911, Haddow said.

Following the wreck, both directions of Pacific Avenue were closed until about 1 a.m. Sunday, she said.
