A man walking along Interstate 5 was struck by a car in Fife on Friday night, causing part of the road to be blocked.

The pedestrian was seriously injured and transported to Tacoma General, according to the Washington State Patrol.

At about 5:45 p.m. Friday, a 45-year-old Tacoma driver heading north on I-5 near 54th Avenue hit the 45-year-old Fife man. The driver was then struck by a 40-year-old Mukilteo driver. The speed limit is 60 mph.

The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and holding a bag. According to the Washington State Patrol, he was standing in the fog line on the HOV lane.

Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, according to the WSP report.

“Nothing indicates the driver was at fault,” Washington State Patrol spokesman Robert Reyer said.

He said he does not believe the pedestrian will be charged.

The cars involved were a black Dodge Challenger and a white Nissan Rogue.

The HOV and left lanes of I-5 were closed for about an hour and a half. The road was cleared by 8:30 p.m. Friday.

The drivers were not injured. They were wearing seatbelts.

There are no updates on the pedestrian’s medical condition, Reyer said.
