Firefighters respond to house fire in Fife that caused heavy damage

A house fire broke out Tuesday afternoon in Fife that fire officials said caused heavy damage to the single-story home.

Tacoma Fire Department responded at about 2:25 p.m. to the house in the 1200 block of Alexander Avenue East, a few blocks north of Pacific Highway East. Fife Police Department and Puyallup Tribal Police Department also went to the fire. No injuries were reported.

Arriving crews saw fire on the porch that soon spread to the attic, fire department spokesperson Joe Meinecke said. He said he didn’t have an estimate for the extent of the damage but that it appeared to be significant. According to Pierce County property records, the house was built in 2000. Photos of the fire shared by Fife police showed smoke and flames spewing above the roof.

Firefighters initially tried to put out the flames by entering the home, Meinecke said, but crews shifted to a defensive approach, cutting holes in it to allow for more ventilation. He said fire crews were working on extinguishing hot spots about an hour after the fire was reported.

Alexander Avenue was closed to traffic while emergency responders were on the scene, according to Fife police.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Meinecke said a fire investigator would go to the house.
