Rent under $1K? Check out the new micro-apartments in this 1920s-era Tacoma building

A Tacoma building dating to the 1920s has entered a new era, this time as micro-unit apartments.

An LLC affiliated with Bill Schilling of Bainbridge Island purchased the property, 4601 Pacific Ave., in 2019 for $315,000.

Since then, “We have been converting this dilapidated old commercial building. It was a convenience market on the bottom,” Schilling told The News Tribune in a recent interview.

The difference now is striking with gold/black paint on the exterior and 13 micro apartments on the inside, all what he says is part of bringing back Pacific Avenue.

“No plumbing, no electricity, it was a mess,” he said of the site, calling the project the first serious property reinvestment there in nearly a half-century.

“There are 14-inch concrete walls on the outside. So that is the only thing that was left. We totally gutted everything on the inside,” Schilling said. “Even the concrete floor, we cut down to the dirt.

“Then we put in new plumbing and everything.”

The new development, just finished, is “to improve the environment, make it safer,” he said. Security cameras and keypad controlled locks for the exterior are some of the building’s security features.

Rents, according to Schilling, are between $975 and $1,200, with units ranging in size from 150 square feet to 250 square feet.

“Each room has their own bathroom,” he added, along with mini fridge and microwave, “and then there’s a large, common kitchen.”

He added there’s also internet available at reduced cost from Comcast.
