Man dies on South Hill Friday after his car veers into a pond, sheriff’s office says
A 69-year-old man who called 911 from his submerged car died Friday after the vehicle swerved into a pond in South Hill’s Sunrise neighborhood, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.
The call from the man came at 2:50 p.m., said sheriff’s spokesperson Darren Moss. The man’s car ran off the road near the intersection of 122nd Avenue East and Sunrise Park Way East.
“He knew exactly where he was,” Moss said, adding that the man lived nearby.
Divers tried to rescue the man — one broke the back window of the sunken car in an effort to reach him, Moss said.
It was too late. Divers pulled the man out of the water at 3:28 p.m. Paramedics were ready to transport him to an area hospital, but he was pronounced dead in the ambulance, Moss said.
Divers dragged the vehicle out of the pond. There were no other passengers. The driver’s window was open, and so was the sunroof, on a day when temperatures approached 80 degrees.
