Apartment fire near Lakewood displaces tenants, damages 10 units

A fire broke out Monday in a two-story apartment complex between Lakewood and Steilacoom that damaged units and displaced multiple residents, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters responded at about 6:45 p.m after 911 callers reported a fire in an apartment in the 10800 block of 108th Avenue Southwest, south of Lakes High School, West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokesperson Jenny Weekes said. Crews arrived to find flames coming from the roof of the building.

No one was injured. Weekes said firefighters removed a man from a second-floor apartment where the fire was reported, but he was evaluated by medics and did not need to be taken to a hospital. Weekes said four fire engines, a ladder truck and other crews were called to the scene to get the fire under control.

Ten apartments were damaged, either by flames, smoke or water, according to Weekes. She said none can be occupied at the moment. On Twitter, the Red Cross said several tenants were displaced, and it was working with local fire officials to provide aid and possibly shelter for those affected.

Crews remained at the apartment until about 10 p.m., Weekes said. It’s unclear how the fire started. The Pierce County fire marshal is investigating.
