Severe weather warning issued for Pierce County Friday evening

The National Weather Service issued a severe weather warning for Pierce County Friday evening.

The rare alert which came around 5:34 p.m. interrupted TV and radio broadcasts to warn of severe lightning storms with possible heavy hail.

The Weather Service said a severe thunderstorm was located eight miles northeast of Eatonville and 17 miles southeast of Puyallup and is nearly stationary.

The NWS warned of 60 mph wind gusts and quarter coin-size hail.

“Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees,” the NWS said.

The Weather Service also warned of hail up to 1/2-inch-wide falling in the Hood Canal area.

The alert was valid through 6:04 p.m.
