Wrong-way crash on SR 410 in Sumner injures 3 early Saturday. Both drivers were arrested
Three people were injured early Saturday morning in a wrong-way crash on State Route 410 in Sumner, according to the Washington State Patrol, which said that drivers of both vehicles were allegedly under the influence and arrested.
The incident was reported just after midnight, just east of Traffic Avenue/Main Avenue, according to a WSP memo to media.
A 34-year-old Kent man driving a 2018 Hyundai Elantra was traveling westbound in an eastbound lane on the state route when he struck a 2015 Jeep Compass being driven eastbound by a 30-year-old Yelm woman, totaling both vehicles, the WSP said.
Both drivers, who were taken to area hospitals for injuries, were allegedly intoxicated and arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, according to the WSP. An individual can be prosecuted for the felony crime under state law if they operate a vehicle while under the influence and cause substantial injury to another.
“Obviously, the person coming the wrong way is mostly at fault,” Trooper John Dattilo told The News Tribune, adding that it will be up to prosecutors to decide how to handle any charges.
A 24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Hyundai was also injured and taken to a hospital, according to the WSP.
It was unknown whether any of the occupants were wearing seat belts, the agency said. The crash shut down the roadway for nearly four hours.
