Eight people were hurt, including some seriously, after a head-on crash on Marine View Drive in northeast Tacoma early Sunday, according to police.

Of the eight people treated for injuries, all of whom were taken to area hospitals, four were described to be in serious condition, and one was described as being in life-threatening condition, Tacoma police reported.

About 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Tacoma police and fire were dispatched to the 5800 block of Marine View Drive.

According to a witness, one driver was apparently racing another through the curves of the street when one of the cars crashed head-on into an uninvolved third vehicle. The second car seen racing in the same area left the scene, according to police.

Marine View Drive was shut down for several hours following the wreck.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Tacoma/Pierce County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
