The department said it began a defensive attack immediately. All occupants and one dog escaped the fire safely, but one dog did not survive.

One family member was evaluated by paramedics on-scene and no other injuries were reported, according to the department. The Pierce County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

Because there are no fire hydrants on Snag Island, water tenders (which transport water from a water source to a fire scene) were used to shuttle water to the scene, taking valuable time, according to the department. East Pierce Fire and Rescue boat, Marine 122, also assisted with fire suppression from the lakeside.
