Have you ever driven around Tacoma and picked up on a strange smell? Many have. But not everyone is in agreement on where the city’s peculiar odor originates.

Residents have taken notice of Tacoma’s aroma over the years. Some say it resembles the smell of dog food. City-dwellers point to a rendering plant on the Tacoma Tideflats as the source of the inescapable odor.

But recently, discussion of Tacoma’s smell has been revitalized as the Westrock Co.’s Tacoma Mill on the Puyallup Waterway announced it is ending operations this fall. Some residents theorize the air pollutants coming from the mill create the port’s noticeable aroma.
